Formed in 1986, to perform at the Tubafest, sponsored by the Suffolk County Music Educator's
Association (SCMEA) the Long Island Tuba Quartet was such a hit that year that the members kept it going and it became a highlight
of the SCMEA Tuba Day every year since. Since then, the group has performed on faculty department music recitals for various
school districts. The group has also appeared as guests with various community and high school concert bands. The group's
most unusual engagement took place when the ensemble performed in Stony Brook at a seminar on "death and dying."
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the group has performed the music for wedding ceremonies and at Christmas parties. Over
the past several years, LITQ has also performed several concerts in libraries and parks on Long Island. The members of the
group, since its inception, are Bill Troiano and Jeff Furman (tubas) and Don Sherman and Michael Canipe (euphoniums). Bill
Troiano, recently retired from the Connetquot School District, has chaired the SCMEA Tubafest (Tuba Day) for the past 29 years.
He was also a member of the Guy Lombardo Orchestra from 1976-78. Although he doesn't consider himself an arranger, he
has arranged most of the rock 'n roll selections that the group performs. Don Sherman teaches in the Northport School
District and conducted the Fordham University Band for nine years. He is currently the associate conductor of the Northport
Community Band. Don has composed and/or arranged many selections that LITQ regularly performs. Several of his arrangements
are published. Michael Canipe was formerly the Director of Performing Arts for the Deer Park School District and later, the
South Huntington School District. He is currently the conductor of the Gemini Winds. He is also active as a bass trombone
player. Jeff Furman is a computer consultant in his own business who just loves to play the tuba. Combining each of the player's
performance experiences together, they have played with almost every musical organization on Long Island, and then some. Performing
music in many styles from classical, to early pop standards, jazz and rock, LITQ is definitely a sound to be heard and
a good time is always had by all, especially by LITQ themselves.
